About

Welcome to Lady Killers a blog celebrating women in music

Lady Killers started out as a zine in 2019. The first issue was about the 90s; my favourite decade in music. As I type this I am working on issue 2: the 00’s issue but I have so much more music I couldn’t fit inside issue 1. That and the reach a blog might have compared to a zine I decided to start a sister site.

As a weird awkward teenager in the late 90s/early 00’s I didn’t really fit in, and found my escape through my love of music- gigs, record shops, music forums, message boards, zines and mags. As well as making music I was an avid zine maker- the main zine I made was called Doll Eyes and focused on women in music (I feel it’s important to point out here I am absolutely inclusive of trans women and NB). I loved making that zine as I got to interview bands, get sent tons of demos in the post and I also got to interview one of my faves: Kelli Ali. Also, confession time: I gave a glowing review to my own EP (hashtag girl boss, hashtag girls that hustle. LOL).

My aim for this blog is to hopefully introduce you to some new bands and artists you might have missed as well as my current finds, celebrate some badass pioneers, chat about hidden gems, and take a critical look at how women in music have been treated by the music press with my collection of music magazine archives.

Finally, why the name Lady Killers?

Well, back in 1996 a cd compilation was released with the same name featuring women musicians. I picked it up because it featured my favourite band Garbage on track 1. This 23 track cd became essential to me and introduced me to so many amazing bands. Skunk Anansie! Lush! Belly! Daisy Chainsaw! Echobelly! Tiny Monroe! Salad! Fluffy! Throwing Muses! The compilation remains an important part of my music education and perfect to name my zine after. You can still find the cd on ebay for cheap and I highly recommend picking it up!
